It’s officially December, and that means the winter fishing in Gulfport is heating up! Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced angler, there’s something for everyone this time of year.
Winter Fishing In Gulfport
If you’re a land dweller who isn’t too fond of highly frigid temperatures when you’re out on the water, Gulfport, MS, is the place for you. With the average temperature hovering from 45 to 70 degrees, the worst you’ll need is a jacket and a windbreaker to keep warm when fishing some of the epic inshore gamefish in the Mississippi marshes. Thanks to the warm winds and waters from the Gulf, the temperature is good for us, and the fish are looking for a warm place to wait out the cold waters. If you’re into inshore fishing, don’t let the winter weather dissuade you, come out and give Gulfport a try.
Hot Species During a Gulfport Winter
When it comes to inshore fishing in late fall and even well into winter, the best fishing can be done when you’re targeting redfish well inshore in the backcountry marshlands. That’s not to say these are the only fish available, not by a long shot. Other fish species that will be appearing in December and throughout the winter also include black drum and even sheepshead. Both are available year-round but make a more significant attempt at catching some bait when the cooler weather kicks in. Even though Gulfport is located in the south, the temperature drops do make the water a bit more chilled than the usual gamefish are used to, so we will probably see a drop in the availability of both speckled trout and flounder.
Still, a little cold isn’t enough to eliminate the local redfish! Redfish in the Mississippi marshlands are so robust you’d think they were made to survive here, no matter what the weather throws at them. The best part about fishing for redfish in winter is that once you spot one, you’ve spotted what feels like them all. Redfish tend to school up pretty big during the winter to help fend off the cold. As we said, redfish are priority number one if you’re looking to fish in the winter in Gulfport, but targeting them will lead to catching some of the other epic inshore fish here!
