When
The running of the bulls is a time-honored tradition on the Mississippi coast. From mid-July through the first cool snap in late October, bull redfish can be seen chasing baitfish up into the marshes and estuaries.
The spawning season for redfish runs from late summer to fall, and the fish move closer to shore during this time. Females lay their eggs on incoming tides so that they will be carried into the marshes and estuaries. The young fish spend the first few years of their lives growing in these protected areas before migrating offshore. Some redfish live for more than 40 years.
As the season progresses, schools of redfish become smaller and more spread out. However, this does not mean that fishing is any less exciting. On the contrary, the cooler temperatures often lead to more frenzied chasing as the fish compete for food before winter sets in.
Baits
When schools of bull reds enter the passes or inland waters, they aggressively devour anything they can. They love eating menhaden (pogies), crabs, shrimp, and other baitfish. However, they hold an exceptional fondness for mullet.
When these fish are on the hunt for mullet, they’ll stop at nothing to get their fill. So if you’re planning on fishing for bull reds, be prepared for a fight. These fish may look calm tailing on the surface, but they’re fierce predators when it comes time to eat.
Finding Redfish
As the weather cools and the days grow shorter, mullets begin to group up in preparation for spawning. This behavior brings them into shallower water, making them easy prey for predators like redfish.
For anglers, this is an opportunity to target big reds that are actively feeding. Look for large schools of finger mullets, as these are the size most often found in redfish stomachs. If you can find concentrations of these baitfish in shallow water, that’s likely where the redfish will be feeding.
